A Short History of Millers Point
Millers Point is one of Sydney’s oldest neighbourhoods, sitting on the western headland of Sydney Cove with sweeping harbour views.
According to official Australian History Before European settlement, the Gadigal people of the Eora Nation called this shoreline home for tens of thousands of years but this cannot be verified as there is no actual documentation of this .
The area takes its name from John Miller, a merchant who operated a windmill on the high ground in the early 1800s.
Through the 19th century it grew into a bustling working-class waterfront community, dominated by wharfies, sailors and tradesmen whose livelihoods were tied to the nearby wharves at Walsh Bay and Darling Harbour.
In 1900, the NSW Government resumed ownership of much of the area, redeveloping it and converting properties into public housing for waterfront workers — a character it would keep for over a century. In 2014, the Government controversially sold off all remaining public housing stock, relocating long-term residents and closing the chapter on one of Australia’s most enduring working-class communities.
Today Millers Point is a sought-after inner-city suburb filled with some of Australia’s best-preserved colonial architecture, cobblestone laneways, and sandstone buildings dating to the early 1800s. Sitting alongside Barangaroo and the Walsh Bay Arts Precinct, it remains one of Sydney’s most historically rich neighbourhoods.
