Medical and dental equipment disposal

Old practice equipment removed, right down to the chair

Dental chairs, examination couches, hospital beds, lift chairs and the cabinetry they were bolted to. OTG removes and disposes of bulky medical and dental equipment across Sydney, from a single lift chair in a home to a full surgery strip-out.

This gear is heavy, awkward and usually installed rather than simply placed. A dental chair is plumbed, wired and bolted through the floor. A hospital bed does not fit through a standard doorway assembled. Most removalists will not touch it, and it is far too heavy for a council kerbside pickup even if they would take it.

We disconnect what needs disconnecting, break it down where it has to come apart, carry it out, and send the metal, plastics and electronics to the right stream instead of straight to landfill.

  • dental chairs, delivery units, cabinetry and surgery fit-outs
  • examination couches, treatment tables and physio benches
  • hospital beds, lift chairs, recliners and mobility equipment
  • autoclaves, sterilisers, dental compressors and suction units
  • waiting room furniture, reception joinery and records cabinets

One clear line: equipment, not clinical waste

This is the first thing to sort out, and we would rather be blunt about it than have a truck turn up to something we cannot legally load. OTG removes equipment, furniture and fit-out. We do not handle clinical, infectious or pharmaceutical waste, and everything we collect has to be decontaminated and emptied before we arrive.

What we will not take, under any circumstances

Sharps and needles, pathology samples and specimens, blood or body-fluid contaminated items, pharmaceuticals, cytotoxic waste, chemicals and reagents, and anything radioactive. All of that must go to a licensed clinical waste contractor, and your practice will already have one. If you are not sure who to call, tell us and we will point you to somebody in our network who does that work properly.

  • No sharps
  • No specimens or pathology
  • No pharmaceuticals
  • No cytotoxic waste
  • No chemicals or reagents
  • No radioactive sources

Once the clinical side has been dealt with properly and the equipment is clean and empty, the heavy lifting is ours. That division keeps everybody on the right side of the rules and means the parts of the job we do quote for are the parts we can actually deliver.

The four jobs we get called for

Dental surgery upgrades and strip-outs

A practice replaces a chair, refits a surgery or moves premises, and twenty years of built-in cabinetry has to come out with it. We work with your fit-out contractor and clear each surgery as it is decommissioned so the trades behind us are not working around a pile of old equipment.

Medical and allied health practices

GP rooms, specialist suites, physio and chiro clinics. Treatment tables, examination couches, waiting room furniture and reception joinery, cleared at the end of a lease or during a refurbishment, usually outside consulting hours.

Aged care and home equipment

The most common call we get. A hospital bed, hoist, lift chair, shower commode or wheelchair in a family home that is no longer needed, often as part of clearing a house after somebody has passed away. We can take one item or the whole house.

Facilities and equipment hire

Aged care facilities, day surgeries and equipment hire businesses cycling out beds, chairs and mobility gear that has reached the end of its service life. One-off or on a regular basis, invoiced to the facility.

If the equipment is still in working order and could be reused, say so when you call. Some items are worth offering to a charity or a community equipment scheme before they get broken down, and we would rather see a serviceable lift chair go to somebody who needs it than into the back of the truck.

How a removal runs

1

Photos and access

Send photos of the equipment and tell us about the access: floor level, lift or stairs, door widths, and where the truck can park. That is what determines the price on this kind of job, far more than weight.

2

Disconnection and breakdown

We unbolt, dismantle and break equipment down on site so it can be carried out safely. Where a licensed trade has to disconnect power, water or gas first, we will tell you before the day rather than on it.

3

Removal and sorting

It goes out through the building without marking walls or lifts, onto the truck, and then to the right stream. Steel and stainless to metal recycling, electronics to e-waste, upholstery and plastics to general.

Old practice equipment often comes out alongside filing cabinets full of patient records. Paper records cannot simply go on the truck with everything else, so we handle those through our secure document destruction service instead, and electronics through e-waste removal.

What it costs and what drives the price

Medical equipment is priced on the job rather than by the item, because two identical dental chairs can be a completely different day's work depending on what is around them. A ground floor surgery with a roller door onto a car park is straightforward. A first floor suite in a heritage building with a small lift and a loading zone that expires at 10am is not.

The things that move the number are access, dismantling time, and whether other trades have to be involved. For a single item in a home, such as a lift chair or a hospital bed, we can usually give you a fixed price over the phone from photos. For a full surgery or practice strip-out we will come and look at it, then quote in writing.

We invoice practices, facilities, fit-out contractors, strata managers and estate solicitors. Certificates of currency and a safe work method statement are available on request, which most commercial buildings and medical centres will ask for before they let a truck onto the dock.

Tell us what is coming out and when the space has to be empty. Fit-outs run to a program, and we would rather book the right day than promise one we cannot hold.

Medical equipment disposal questions

  • Does the equipment have to be cleaned before you arrive?

Yes. Equipment needs to be decontaminated, emptied and free of any clinical material before we load it. That is a requirement for us and for the facilities we deliver to, and it is not something we can do on your behalf.

  • Can you take a single hospital bed or lift chair from a house?

Yes, and we do it constantly. One item is a normal booking. If it is part of clearing a whole home, have a look at deceased estate and whole-house clearouts, which is usually the better way to price it.

  • Will you disconnect the chair or the steriliser yourself?

We unbolt and dismantle equipment, but we do not do licensed electrical, plumbing or gas disconnection. If that is required, it needs a licensed trade first. Tell us what is connected when you enquire and we will tell you what has to happen before our day.

  • Can you work outside consulting hours?

Yes. Most practice work happens in the evening, at the weekend or during a shutdown, so patients are not walking past equipment being carried out. Building access hours are usually the limiting factor rather than ours.

  • What happens to the equipment after you take it?

Steel and stainless go to metal recycling, electronic components go to e-waste processing, and only what genuinely cannot be recovered goes to landfill. Across all of our work OTG recycles over 80 per cent of what we collect.

Mark from OTG was amazing as was his offsider Mauricio. I called Mark in the morning, he was at my place 2 hours later, job quoted and ready to be done same day! They both worked hard to clear what I needed done and they not only did that but cleaned up the areas after. Mark went above & beyond what I expected. I have no problem recommending OTG Rubbish Removals.

I cannot recommend OTG Rubbish Removal highly enough. From the very first click to the final cleanup, the entire process was seamless.

The booking experience was incredibly straightforward and stress-free. They were prompt, arriving exactly when they said they would, which is a rarity in service industries these days. The team was professional, friendly, and handled everything with a great 'can-do' attitude.

It’s clear they take pride in their work. My space was left spotless, and the efficiency they showed was impressive. If I could give them more than 5 stars, I absolutely would!

If you need rubbish gone fast with zero hassle, do yourself a favor and call OTG. Highly recommended!!
